ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

Beginning in 1985, Pittsburgh's original Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science (1939-1991) offered special events and free general admission each year on the Summer Solstice, usually June 21. It started by offering free admission to anyone who brought with them a snowball [yes, a real snowball !); this offer was publicized during the Winter months prior to the Summer Solstice. The snowballs were evaluated for chemical composition, while melting.

Later on, Buhl simply publicized the annual "Solstice Day" as a free-of-charge day for everyone.

Recently, Pittsburgh's Carnegie Science Center has ressurrected the event, along with the free-admission-with-snowball offer.
