I will *3rd* the comments about the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
I have never been to a more captivating museum experience. And, being a
professional in the field, it was amazing to watch people interact with each
exhibit piece. There are large amounts of text in many of the exhibits.
This is a rough estimate but some capture times at the exhibits seemed to be
on the order of 5 - 10 minutes with some as high as 20 minutes. Many
visitors seemed to read every bit of text and watch every piece of video
footage. It took me about 4 hours to go through the whole thing (and I read
a lot of it) and I noticed that many families that I came in with were
moving right along with me.

I will second that - I still remember that experience and the person in
my booklet more than 8 years after the fact.

And, building on Jeff's comments on the Ellis Island exhibit...the
identification cards designed for the United States Holocaust Memorial
Museum. Visitors are given identification cards upon entering the
permanent exhibition; each card describes the experiences of one person
who was living during the Holocaust and who was persecuted by the Nazis
(or their collaborators). It's a small booklet that is carried through
the exhibition, and as you move through the exhibition the person's
story is revealed. Amazing. Powerful. And utterly effective at helping
to put an individual face on such a huge story.

Paul, your first query sort of struck me....one of the best exhibits
I've ever seen is the ellis island exhibit where you pick up a phone and
listen to a real person telling a real story...even tho its just 'audio'
and 'talking heads' it was one of the most powerful pieces I've ever
seen...

Sorry, know that's not much help....but thought I'd share.
