Jon,
We tested a trail guide on the iPod Touch this summer. In comparison
to other technology out there, the iPod was the most user friendly
thing we found, but there were still some challenges. A quick listing
of things to keep in mind:
-we connected it to a lanyard so that it wasn't dropped (also in a
plastic sleeve to protect it from water - the touch screen still
worked through the plastic)
-the screen is not visible in direct sunlight
-children are capable of freezing the screen if they tap it too much
in succession
-some visitors were hoping that they could download the app directly
onto their own device after they arrived (we just tested on one device
and so we didn't get too far into the logistics of putting our app in
Apple's store)
-we wanted our guide to be used by families and small groups, but we
were limited by the audio capability of the device, which seems like
overkill in an office and then seems mute on our museum floor
I have much more detail that I can send on to you directly if you are
interested.
Let me know.
Emily
