We're all pretty good at reaching families, school groups, and teens,
but how about people like me?  A young thirty-something, no kids, not
married, looking for something hip to do for the evening?

This maybe not quite what you were after, but the recent Newcastle Science Festival included many events aimed at adults as well as families.  These tried to go beyond the regular guest lecture approach, but the one that sold out quickest (as it did last year) was this one:
