I'm pretty sure it was Harry Harlow, the same researcher who decades ago famously gave baby monkeys surrogate mothers made out of milk bottles wrapped in fur (the "Monkey Love Experiements"), who concluded that baby monkeys are born with a innate fear of darkness, falling, and snakes.

Ergo, snakes are the preordained enemy of primates everywhere.
