Mathew Henson was the first --and arguably the most significant--
African American explorer of the Arctic in the great era of polar
exploration. He accompanied Admiral Peary on all his major
expeditions in search of the North Pole, including the final
expedition (the 7th, I think) that reached the pole.. Peary called
Henson "the most indispensible man" and he was highly respected by
the Inuit because he was the best hunter, extremely competent with
sled dogs and particularly fluent in the Inuit language. Peary and
Henson traveled together for years but after the successful Polar
expedition, they parted company and only saw each other once more.
Apparently Peary was reluctant to share the spotlight with anyone,
especially not with an African American. Henson spent the rest of his
life working as a clerk in the NY Customs House and received
recognition for his role in Polar exploration only when he was a very
old man.
