Dear Liz,

This would be a great question for the new ACUMG-L listserv. It serves over
1,600 museum professionals at academic museums. ACUMG stands for Association

of College & University Museums & Galleries. You can learn more on our
website: http://www.mpcer.nau.edu/acumg

To send a message to that group you will need to subscribe to ACUMG-L. You
can
do this by sending an e-mail to: [log in to unmask]

Our particular museum has grown out of the coalescence of seven divisions of

life sciences collections comprising 425,000 specimens from fossils to DNA.
We
are an integral part of the university and have not sought independent
status.

I know of other state museums of natural history that are located on college

campuses, but have their own line item budgets from the state legislature,
but
I'm not sure if any of them have official 501(c)3 status above and beyond
their being not-for-profit through their governmental affiliation. This
would
be an excellent question for the ACUMG-L group.

All the Best!

Stefan
