We use a restaurant app for letting visitors know when it is their turn for certain workshop.  We're still prototyping the idea but for now it works with a few complaints.  The visitors receive a text when it is their turn as some workshops might require an hour wait while other visitors finish working on projects.

I did some research a few months ago on the handheld guide/tour topic, and found a ton of reports, including the Tallon and Walker mentioned earlier.

There's also a group on Zotero called Mobile Museums, which collects articles of all kinds about handheld device/museum work.  Definitely a firehose, but there's a lot there.
