What Ed Sobey said is all good advice.
 
I'd add that microwave ovens have the potential to be dangerous.  I would not let visitors disassemble those.
 
I realize the gender implications, but the best appliance I ever watched get taken apart was a hair dryer.  It has several different parts, each with a different function, but they are all visible and obviously distinct.  Once you have it apart, it's really easy to identify how it does what it does.
