Thanks Eric:
I wasn't looking for formula's per se - I've built a bunch over time
as well....It's just that in a moment of scratching on the back of a
piece of paper I was wondering how to attack the problem in a
quantitative way. Eric Y. suggested looking at terminal velocity,
which has been a great place to start (I had started by thinking
about the air column rather than from the object's perspective)....it
is, or at least appears to me to be, a very complex problem, so I'll
just have to go back to tinkering, which is where I should be.
Although I do have a friend from college who is a rocket scientist
(really) and I think I'm going to write him!
