Thank you all for the helpful responses.  

Paul - I hadn't thought of carpet - I'll have to look into that. 
The surface is irregular, and we're going for almost a pleated look, so
I'm not sure it will work, but it's definitely worth a shot for the
durability factor.

I'll look into the other suggestions as well.  Trunk lining sounds
intriguing - I saw ripstop parachute cloth on one website, which might
be similarly very high on the durability scale, just not sure how soft
or inviting it would be.

I've used the material they use for trunk lining - its a cross  
between fabric and carpet and is pretty tough.  may be limited in
