List members,

This is the agenda for the Student Subcommittee (of the SHA Academic and
Professional Training Committee) meeting in Quebec. Please pass it along
to anyone who might be interested. Our meeting will be on Friday, January
7,
7:00-8:30. The location is TBA. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Individuals
can also send me comments by email or snail mail at the addresses below. I
am in the field, mid-archive on my dissertation fieldwork, so while I will
read
every note and bring all contributions to the table in Quebec, please
forgive
me if it takes a short while for me to answer your note with a follow-up.

If you are a student or practicing archaeological technician, please check
your registration materials at the conference for a survey. The committee
is requesting input from student members to help us figure out how to best
facilitate the student members of the SHA.

Also note that we are very interested in thoughts from underwater students,
archaeological technicians (shovelbums), and student members (or potential
members) from outside the US and Canada.

Thanks.

Old Business (Projects):

1. Thank you and acknowledgements from 1999

2. Assessment of SHA Student Membership. Based upon our year long
assessment of old survey data, Elizabeth Norris's and Tim Scarlett's poster
examining current SHA membership, and the student survey at the Quebec
meeting, we must define our committee mission. I will prepare some draft
mission statements we can kick around in Quebec. Consider what the
goals and objectives of our committee should be: What can we do to best
serve the student membership?

Old Business (Annual):

1. 2000 update of The Guide to Graduate Programs

2. Selection of topic and organizer for 2001 Student Forum

3. Selection of topics and volunteers for quarterly column in SHA Newsletter

4. Assessment of the Roomshare/Rideshare program and selection of volunteers

for 2001.

5. Selection of volunteer to prepare materials for registration packets in
2001 (schedule, etc.)

New Business (Projects for 2000 and 2001):

1. Discussion of recruitment of Underwater students during 2000. Our
committee is supposed to represent ALL the student members of the SHA,
and up until this year we didn't even have underwater members. At present
we have been joined by two students with that focus. Therefore we will
discuss our goals to increase the involvement of underwater students on the
committee and to help current committee members understand needs of
underwater students.

2. Communication problems. Several people informed me that they felt
detached or "out of the loop" during the year. This was due to several
factors, including the very large degree of freedom from harassment that I
gave to people with tasks (by that I mean that I left each person to
remember
to meet their deadlinesŠ) This worked fairly well, but produced two
unfortunate side effects. First, people often were left hanging out in the
cold
with nobody to talk to about the project. Second, when people had slightly
different ideas about what was supposed to be done, things just didn't get
done.
I would like to discuss how to solve this problem, and I am particularly
attracted
to the idea of a website that would list deadlines, who is doing what with
whom,
and contain updates on completions and some social information regarding
who has gone into the field, where, and when they will be backŠ

3. Discussion of recruitment of Archaeological Technicians during 2000 and
2001. The Student Subcommittee is also supposed to represent the needs of
Archaeological Technicians (here I mean people without terminal degrees,
working in CRM, commonly referred to as 'shovelbums'). After increasing
involvement of Underwater students, this group is perhaps the most invisible

of all groups we are to represent. The committee will be seeking input from

archaeological technicians during Quebec 2000 and throughout the year until
2001. By 2001, I would like to have concrete suggestions on how we can best
2002. serve this portion of our society.

4. Discussion of and creation of committee structure.
We will need to formulate an official committee structure. When Elizabeth
Kellar and Doug Pippin first started the committee, it worked very well
with an informal structure, but now that there are increased tasks and
objectives
we have to formalize (and Terry Majewski and Marcy Gray simply can't
research
and approve all 30 people that want to help with the committee every year.
The
president approves all committee members and presidents like three year
terms
of committee members in normal committees. This will not mean that we must
restrict involvement with the committee, but only that we differentiate
between
"members" and "volunteers" Volunteers can undertake projects for the
committee
and give input into committee actions, but are not bound to terms of service
and
do not have to be elected and approved by the president and SHA office.

The three year term is not always an option for students, so I recommend the
following structure. Also note that I have staggered the committee terms so
that we will have consistency from year to year. I do not expect the
Committee
to have this exact structure every year, but that we will strive to achieve
this
degree of balance:

Position Period Term Turnover
chair (3 years) 99-02 (turns over at 2003 meeting)
SHA employ cord. term determined outside committee
chair, APTC term determined outside committee

1 Terrestrial (3 years) 01-03 (turns over 04)
1 Underwater (3 years) 00-02 (turns over 03)
1 Technician (3 years) 99-01 (turns over 02)

1 Ph.D. Student (2 years) 00-01 (turns over 02)
1 MA Student (2 years) 01-02 (turns over 03)
1 Undergraduate (2 years) 02-03 (turns over 04)

All are welcome at the meeting. The meeting is only 1 hour long, and
several
committee members are giving papers on Friday morning, so I will do my
best to move the discussion along.

Cheers to all,
Tim

When I feel the hidden power that lies inside your sound
Like the ghost inside the atom that spins it round and round.
There's magic in some words, something you can't explain
That conjures up that feeling of the sun inside the rain.
