"First, the newest national monument, the African Burial Ground
memorial, has its grand opening 1 p.m. Friday on Duane St. between
Broadway and Elk St. The memorial is dedicated to Africans of early
New York and Americans of African descent. Expect high pedestrian
volumes throughout the day. A ground-breaking procession to honor the
memorial begins 7:30 p.m. Friday, going to Foley Square from Battery
Park along the following route: Greenwich, Morris, Church Sts., Park
Place, Broadway, Duane, Lafayette Sts., and onto Worth St./Foley
Square, where the celebration continues till late. Closures are
expected as the procession makes its way through, but these streets
will reopen once it proceeds to another street."
