What: Workshop - "Archaeological Site Survey with Handheld XRF Analyzers"

When: Saturday, November 10, 2007, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Where: Mission San Diego de Alcalá, San Diego, CA

Wondjina Research Institute (WRI), Thermo Fisher Scientific, Geotechnical Services, and the Center for Spanish Colonial Research (CSCR) invite you to a free demonstration and workshop showing the capabilities of the newly developed handheld x-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology for archaeological site surveys. You will also have the "hands on" opportunity to try the new Thermo Scientific NITON® XL3t XRF analyzer.

Dr. Claudia Brackett, Archaeochemist of California State University-Stanislaus (CSUS), and Mr. Richard J. Lundin, RPA and Director of WRI, will conduct the surveys and workshop for Dr. Jack Williams for CSCR. All attendees are invited to observe the process, participate, and bring samples for XRF analyses. Dr. Brackett and Mr. Lundin are pioneers in the use of this technology for archaeology and have given successful workshops and presentations on its use at SHA meetings in Sacramento and Williamsburg, SAA meetings in San Juan and Austin, and AGU in Acapulco.

Schedule

09:00-10:30 Lectures by Dr. Jack Williams of CSCR on the history of the site and CSCR programs; by Ms. Deblyn Palella of GEOTECHNICAL on the technical specifications on the XL3t unit; and by Dr. Claudia Brackett of CSUS instructing the archaeologist in a basic working understanding of the chemical principles that are applicable and specific to handheld XRF archaeochemical studies. Demonstrations of archaeochemical laboratory and field equipment by Dr. Brackett, Mr. Lundin and Ms. Palella.

10:30-12:00 Field archaeochemical surveys of Mission San Diego.

12:00-13:00 Lunch Break with Dr. Brackett, Mr. Lundin, and Julia Kleyman of Thermo Fisher Scientific.

13:00-17:00 Field archaeochemical surveys and participant instruction in use of the equipment by Mr. Richard Lundin, followed by informal discussion of the History and Practice of Field Archaeochemistry and its relationship to Combined Survey Format (CSF) archaeogeophysical and archaeochemical field studies.

Workshop CDs containing Dr. Brackett's and Mr. Lundin's presentations, as well as copies of both early and recent papers and presentations on field archaeochemistry, will be distributed at the workshop.

Further workshops and presentations are scheduled for SHA in Albuquerque, SAA in Vancouver and WAC-6 in Dublin. This is an opportunity for archaeologists in Southern California to see and use this technology in their "back yard" at a known historical site. For further information, a detailed schedule of events, directions how to get to the site and to RSVP by November 1, call or e-mail Rich Lundin at (209) 532-3873 or [log in to unmask] Also visit the Mission San Diego de Alcalá website at www.missionsandiego.com.

Sincerely,
