Have you looked at Neville Ritchie's PhD thesis from New Zealnd?
1986    Archaeology and History of the Chinese in Southern New
AZealand During the Nineteenth Centry.  University of Otago,
Dunedin, New Zealand (Anthropology Dept.)
He has an incredible amount of information on Chinese sites including
information on opium smoking and associated artifacts.  It may be
useful to you.
