Although I don't have the specific reference at hand now, some good entries
would include "St. Catherines: An Island in Time" by David Hurst Thomas, about
AMNH excavations at the Spanish mission there, and also several recent popular
volumes which have emerged out of the Santa Elena project on Parris Island,
S.C., authored variously by Stan South and Chester DePratter (regarding the
late 16th-century Spanish town there). These are all written for a lay
audience, and are based on excellent long-term fieldwork projects.
