Between Baltimore and Cape Cod is Winterthur, Hagley, New Castle and
Wilmington, in Delaware just off I-95. I agree that the Monmouth County
Historical Society (and the nearby battlefield) at Freehold is outstanding,
but one must not forget the museums in the Brandywine Valley.

If you have a stomach for pure kitsch, there is the Brandywine River
Museum, at Chadds Ford, Pa., shrine to the business of magazine
illustration and the Wyeth cult. The pictures are pretty.

Winterthur, the museum of early American Decorative Arts, stands as a
monument to the excesses that are possible when you own the company and you
have an irresistable urge to own everything pretty.

Hagley is more than a gunpowder museum, dedicated to remembering how the
duPont family made oodles of money off the government before they had the
even greater oodles of money they made off the government in the present
century.

The Read House and the rest of New Castle is real and under-exploited. Do
not miss it. In the middle of megurbia, Delaware's colonial capital has
become a sort of retirement village for those who have smaller pieces of
the same money (above). There is an ongoing archaeological program at the
Read House and intermittent archaeology on some of the publicly-owned sites
in the town.
