Subject: Funding Exploration Symposium
"Into the Field: Strategies for Funding Exploration" 20-21 April 1996,
Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA
Scientists, historical researchers, divers, climbers, and others whose work
lead them into the field are constantly scraping and scratching for the
funds to underwrite exploration. Experts predict by the 21st Century the
challenge for field explorers will not be overcoming the obstacles of
political unrest in some exotic locale, but rather the daily demands of
securing funding for increasingly expensive research, travel, equipment, and
infrastructure. The conventional wisdom is the money is just not available.
The conventional wisdom is wrong.
This two-day weekend conference will explore proven strategies for
identifying, soliciting, and securing cash, in-kind donations (equipment),
and long-term support (endowment, etc.) from individuals, corporations,
foundations, and governmental entities in the U.S. and abroad.
Participants will learn strategies and tactics for developing fundable ideas
based upon their serious scientific expeditions and how to present them to a
host of constituencies, including their own Boards, foundations &
corporations, and the mass media.
Sponsored by The Philadelphia Chapter of the Explorers Club, "Into the
Field: Strategies for Funding Exploration," will focus on developing new
channels of opportunity for field explorers. The conference will show
established explorers how to initiate new and novel mechanisms of funding,
documentation, and publicity--critical skills for an era of decreased
government funding and diminished academic resources.
