TheCenter for Archaeology and Society (CAS) at Arizona State University is seekingan assistant director for Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve, who would also teachin ASU’s graduate museum studies program, with an anticipated start date in July2017. The full-time,benefits-eligible position is renewable on an annual basis (July 1 - June 30),contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and theneeds of the university. Under general supervision from the Directors of theCenter for Archaeology and Society (CAS) in the School of Human Evolution andSocial Change (SHESC), and ultimately from the Directorate of SHESC, thisposition will focus on operating and programming the Deer Valley PetroglyphPreserve (DVPP) to display and interpret Southwestern archaeology at its museumand 47-acre Sonoran Desert preserve, and to serve as the premier publicoutreach facility for SHESC. 
CAS integrates theSchool’s research, education, and outreach activities through the Deer ValleyPetroglyph Preserve, the Innovation Gallery, and the Alameda Repository. Itsfocus is on Southwest US Archaeology, highlighting connections between the pastand the present. The Assistant Director will be pivotal in supervising theday-to-day operations of the site and translating the intellectual content ofCAS and the Preserve into public programs, events, and interpretive materials.It involves working closely with CAS staff and other SHESC faculty and students.The position is based at the Deer Valley museum, but requires regular meetingsat the Tempe campus and the Alameda repository. The Assistant Director wouldalso teach one graduate level museum studies course per academic year on theTempe campus.
Additional duties willinclude conceptualizing and implementing events and programs at the Preservethat support the academic mission of SHESC with a scope that expands beyond rockart to encompass Southwest art, culture, archaeology, and desertlandscapes/sustainability and that showcase the work of SHESC faculty andstudents.  Duties also include workingwith facilities staff at the ASU West campus and the Maricopa County FloodControl District with respect to the operation and maintenance of the DeerValley museum and preserve; developing innovative museum operations and visitorexperiences; maintaining robust volunteer/docent/researchapprenticeship/membership programs; advancing DVPP’s mission via partnerships,community relationships and private investments; providing a dynamic, safe andsustainable work, volunteer, and visitor environment representing ASU’s values;support the museum studies program through teaching and serve as an integralmember of the museum studies program, museum team and SHESC staff; andrepresent the Preserve to various audiences including potentially, the media. 
The CAS Repository houses majorcollections from the U.S. Southwest including extensive Hohokam collectionsfrom numerous projects in central Arizona, materials from the TheodoreRoosevelt Dam projects, the Cibola Region of New Mexico and Arizona, theMimbres region of New Mexico, and smaller collections from many other regionsacross the U.S. Southwest. 
 
Minimum qualifications include a Masterof Arts or Science in a related field, five years of museum experience, andexperience teaching college level museum studies or in a related field. Desiredqualifications include knowledge of and experience in museum studies,Southwesterern archaeology, and anthropology. 
 
The CAS is a consolidated research,curation, and educational outreach organization at ASU focused on addressingenduring issues in the present by exploring and communicating the diversity ofsolutions developed by ancient societies in the past, particularly in aridregions like the U.S. Southwest. CAS encompasses and expands the ASU activitiesformerly associated with the Archaeological Research Institute, the Deer ValleyPetroglyph Preserve, and the Museum of Anthropology. It also partners withthe Center for Digital Antiquity, the Teotihuacan Research Facility,and on several ongoing research projects in the U.S. Southwest conducted byfaculty in the ASU School of Human Evolution & Social Change. The broad scope of the CAS initiative is designed to allowfaculty and affiliated researchers to integrate their research findings intothe school's curriculum, to involve undergraduate and graduate students in allphases of research, and to reach the wider, non-academic public throughpresentations and exhibitions of research results.

The fiscal year (12-month) salary rangefor this positon is $55,000 - $62,000 along with competitive benefits throughASU including health insurance, paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays. The candidatemust be in residence in the greater-Phoenix metropolitan area during theappointment.
