Summer 2007

Introduction to Museum Studies in London

In the Summer of 2007, Missouri Valley College is offering a new museum studies class through their Study Abroad Program <http://www.moval.edu/academics/studyabroad/index.asp> in London, England. This London program is part of an international studies consortium of 39 colleges and universities and was developed in association with International Enrichment <http://www.ie2uk.com/> .

London has over 200 museums, including some of the oldest and most prestigious in the world. This museum course will utilize these amazing institutions and their collections as a teaching tool to explore the history, types, and approaches of museums.

This three-week program will operate between May 18 and June 12 for three credit hours. This course is recommended for students interested in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, art, art history, astronomy, biology, education, geology, historic preservation, history, material culture studies, and zoology, but is also applicable to business administration, marketing, and public relations. There are no prerequisites for this course, but a Sophomore standing is required. Classroom instruction will be at Imperial College <http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/> , which is located in the heart of London.

Museum Internship Option

After the three-week class has ended, students can also enroll in a summer internship at a London museum for six additional credit hours. Internships are typically 30 to 40 hours a week, may require evening or weekend hours, and will run between June 11 and August 12. Internship assignments will be based on the student’s interests and by museum availability in London. All internships are non-paying positions. You must have a Junior standing to enroll in the internship. The Science Museum <http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/> , Natural History Museum <http://www.nhm.ac.uk/> , and the Victoria & Albert Museum <http://www.vam.ac.uk/> are located immediately south of Imperial College and may be the most convenient for an internship, but London’s mass transit system is fast and efficient and can get to almost any museum.
