Redefining the question:  have any of you in your digs or field work
seen anything other than lard, crisco, wonder lube, spit, bear grease--used to
lubricate the patches in black powder arms to stop chelating of iron
in the barrels?  Rumors indicate the Northwest coast natives used
other substances.
