The Department of Archaeology at The Hermitage is pleased to announce an employment opportunity in our Archaeology Laboratory. This position is funded through a two-year grant from the National Endowment from the Humanities, which will result in the reanalysis of the entire archaeological collection and eventual uploading of the analysis to the Digital Archaeological Archive of Comparative Slavery (DAACS) at http://www.daacs.org.

We are seeking an individual with a deep knowledge of nineteenth-century material culture to join our dynamic team as we reanalyze one of the most significant assemblages in the history of the archaeology of enslaved communities.

Founded in 1889 by the Ladies' Hermitage Association, The Hermitage was home to Andrew and Rachel Jackson, their adopted son and his family, and over 200 enslaved African Americans. Visitors to The Hermitage can explore the Hermitage mansion and associated outbuildings, an adjacent formal English garden and three log cabins that were homes to enslaved families.

The collection includes one of the most complete inventories of furnishings dating to the 1830s of any historic home in the United States. The collection also includes over 800,000 artifacts recovered from archaeological investigations on the museum property over the past 40 years. These materials represent one of the largest and most significant collections from a single enslaved community in the United States.
