A good general reference for the origins of all words is the American
Heritage Dictionary-- the full-size version has Indo-European roots and
etymologies as an Appendix.

Of course, there is very little prose explanation in the dictionary for the
development of any given word, but it's a good place to start, and can often
answer basic questions immediately.
