ARCHAEOLOGIST II (UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGIST)
 
New Position:  The South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology
(SCIAA) desires to hire a Full-Time, Permanent, Classified Position,
Archaeologist II (Underwater Archaeologist).  The position will be filled
on or soon after November 14, 1995 in Columbia, South Carolina.
        The SCIAA and the University of South Carolina are

Duties:  Under the direction and general supervision of the Deputy State
Archaeologist and Head, Underwater Archaeology Division, the Archaeologist
II will assist in the planning, implementation, and direction of fieldwork
and archaeological research the SCIAA's Underwater Archaeology Division.
As approved by the DSA for U/W, the archaeologist will be responsible for
(1) planning, conducting, overseeing, and seeking funding for maritime
archaeological research, including historical and archival research,
underwater and terrestrial fieldwork, and analyzing archaeological and
historical data, (2) publishing and disseminating research information
through academic, scholarly, and popular publications, as well as through
presenting professional and public lectures and talks, (3) reviewing and
responding to public notices to ensure compliance with state and federal
historic preservation regulations, (4) teaching in various Institute
academic and public programs, and (5) participating in the Institute's Dive
Safety Plans as diver, team leader, diving supervisor and safety officer.
 
Knowledge/Skills/Expertise Required: Ideal qualifications will include a
Ph.D. degree in archaeology, anthropology or historical archaeology with a
specialization in nautical or underwater archaeology from a recognized
program; or a master's degree in archaeology, anthropology or historical
archaeology with a specialization in nautical or underwater archaeology
from a recognized program, and two years of professional experience
including relevant fieldwork, personnel supervision, and advanced research
(or equivalent education and work experience).  Job experience in
management of submerged cultural resources essential, as is the ability to
interface with the public through public speaking and public relations, and
the ability to prepare and publish reports and scholarly articles.
Applicant must be a trained scuba diver, able to be certified as a
Scientific Diver by the SCIAA Dive Safety and Control Board, and able to
conduct black water and marine archaeological diving operations.  Knowledge
of the culture history and prehistory in the Southeast United States is
desirable.
        The Archaeologist II offers a salary ranging from $23,571 to
$36,965, with yearly legislative increases.  Fringe benefits are the
standard State-University offerings, including health, dental and life
insurance, and retirement programs.
        The position reports to the Deputy State Archaeologist for
Underwater and Head, Underwater Archaeology Division.  The employee will
have a fair degree of independence to pursue research opportunities within
the context of the Division's mandate and under the authority of the DSA
for U/W.  The position may supervise from one to four personnel including a
graduate assistant and work-study students.
 
THE CONTEXT OF EMPLOYMENT AGENCY
        The South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology
(SCIAA) was first established in 1963 and currently serves as the main
State agency concerned with South Carolina's prehistoric and historical
archaeology.  The Institute also administers the provisions of 1991 State
Underwater Antiquities Act.  As an administrative unit of the University of
South Carolina, SCIAA initiates and conducts research, manages graduate
student stipends and performs teaching, as well as assists other state
agencies, such as South Carolina Parks, Recreation and Tourism, and South
Carolina Department of Natural Resources, in land use activities.
        The SCIAA has thirty five to forty employees and a total yearly
budget for Archaeological and Anthropological offices of about $1.0
million.  It also provides the home offices of the professional Council of
South Carolina Archaeologists and the avocational Archaeological Society of
South Carolina organizations, and provides offices for Research Assistants
and graduate students.
        SCIAA's conservation unit maintains the Western Hemisphere's
largest waterlogged wood conservation facility, where the 1740's-period
Brown's Ferry Vessel underwent treatment, and conserves a full range of
artifacts from marine and terrestrial environments.  It also curates the
archaeological collections of the State in a 29,000 cubic foot facility.
