First. . . Natalie Adams alluded to a UNC diss. regarding the subject. .
. I believe that reference is Price 1988 (or 89) and is titled something
like "Raised on Hard Times: Cultural Material changes in North Carolina
Pediment Farming 1860-1940". . . Sorry I don't have the particulars in
front of me. . . anybody else have the full title?
 
This is an interesting and controversial question down here in the
Mississippi delta. . . and I personally believe we have a lot to learn
archaeologically from late 19th/eraly 20th century farmsteads. . .
providing the structure of the site can yield that information
(sub-surface features, etc.)
 
The state of Mississippi have a written policy NOT giving site numbers
to sites not having 18th century diagnostics. . . you can fill out a
site card on 20th C. material but it gets filed in the back of the file
and no number will be given. . . I think this lack of "numbering" hints
at the larger question of "eligibility". . . I mean if it can't even
rate a number, it is difficult to argue NRHP status by criteria D.
 
I understand a upcoming Mississippi Archaeology article will directly
address this question. . . I also understand that Skip Stewart-Abernathy
will publish a response to the policy. . . .
 
Maybe Skip would like to comment on this. . . To this end I'm
cross-posting to HISTARCH-L. . . eh, Skip?
