If you run out of sources, some other possible places

Here in St. Louis there were early 19th century beer gardens on top of the
Mississippian period mounds which gave St. Louis the name of "mound city".
Why? The story is that the mounds were tall enough that they got a nice
breeze on summer afternoons and evenings. Thus while it gets very humid
here in the summer, those were for us in St. Louis a good place to go,
tipple, and feel a breeze in the stifling summer heat.

I have seen miscellaneous 'just so' comments about that in various period
Gazetteer articles on other subjects, and have idly thought I might follow
it up someday. So while the situation in St. Louis would be different
than the semi-arid Southwest, you might find some nice quotes to include
in your thesis.
