Well, believe it or not, good old saliva will do the trick if you don't leave
the saturated patch in the barrel for too long.
 
Most of the vegetable based commercial patch lubes work pretty well, and most
of them are based on OxYoke Originals Wonder Lube. Also sold in various forms
by Thompson Center and Uncle Mikes...Some folks like to use Crisco, but mixed
with black powder it smells like bacon frying and can really make you hungry.
