This was on archaeobotany, and I thought it would interest several readers
of this list.

Subject: coffin wood research

I am circulating this request on behalf of Lynne Bell who writes: " I
am presenting a review paper on scientific advances in the study of
human skeletal remains, specifically British historical cemetery and
crypt excavations. Part of the presentation will include future
research priorities. It is on this point that I am contacting you. I
would like to know if you feel there may be research potential in
studying the wood from these sites, not just in terms of identification
but alsoisotopically, for instance? It would be extremely helpful to get
some kind of response from you as a group; it is my feeling that over the
next few years great changes are coming to the study of human remains
e.g. reburial issues and research priorities. In this context I think
this is a good opportunity to assess the amount of work done so far
on the coffin wood - all updates of information and publication
details on this aspect would be much appreciated - and also to hear
your views on the research questions which might be addressed in the
future which could make use of the coffin wood. I shall be at the
conference "Grave Concerns" at the University of Bournemouth 19-20
April 1997. Thereafter I shall be back in the Department of
Archaeology, University of Cape Town on: [log in to unmask]
or please send replies to: [log in to unmask]
With many thanks, Lynne Bell"
