This project is extremely useful for research. Are there projects like this
ongoing in others states which are being posted to web sites?

Utah Burials

The Utah State Historical Society has produced a dual-purpose
Web-based database. One part is a database of information extracted
from headstones in Utah cemeteries. Using a variety of paid and
volunteer researchers, the USHS has compiled thousands of names of
those buried in the state, often with the dates of their birth and
death, and occasionally with one or more names of relatives.

The second part of this database is a cemetery locator. Even when a
name cannot be found online, a cemetery and its owner may be located
using the database of Utah cemeteries. This can be invaluable for
planning personal visits to family plots, or in contacting current
owners of cemeteries for data on those who are buried in their
plots.

This project is not yet complete, so there is still an opportunity
for you to volunteer if you know of a Utah cemetery that needs
transcription and adding to the database. But it's an excellent
beginning to eventually placing all of this nominally public data on
the Internet for use by genealogists and local historians.
