"PASAJE BELGRANO". SITE MUSEUM

At the beginning of the last decade of the XIXth century, a wealthy Basque
merchant orders the construction of this building, emblematic of the
architectural heritage of Buenos Aires. Faithful exponent of his time, the
Belgrano Passage was an imposing building that combined commercial premises
with dwellings, an estructure worthy of a growing city that aspired to
resemble to the great European capitals.
The remarkable transformations suffered by Buenos Aires during the XXth
century left their mark on the building:
when the widening of the Belgrano avenue was carried out, the sector that
gave on that artery was demolished.
The lot was subdivided and the new constructions that were raised closed
the southern exit of the passage.
But not all are losses in the history of this building...
Since its recent re-inauguration, the Belgrano Passage projectes itself
towards a new dimension: to enter in it today supposes to travel in time
until the very beginnings of the city. This is because between the years
2005 and 2011, during the restoration works, important archaeological
discoveries took place in this property.
Researchers identified dozens of underground structures ad recovered And
recovered thousands of daily life objects which cover the first three
centuries in the city's life.
The heritage valuable structures were incorporated into the restoration and
refuncionalization project in order to be appreciated by the public and a
site museum was also set up to exhibit the most representative objects of
the Belgrano Passage archaeological collection
