I am researching a pipe bowl fragment recently excavated from a
multicomponent site at the mouth of the La Vase River, in North Bay,
Ontario. One component relates to a trader who was connected with the North
West Company circa 1800-1820, although the ealiest component dates to the
Middle Woodland period. This particular pipe is unique in the assemblage as
most of the marked bowls are from (1730-1790) form "TD" and "WG" pipes.

The surface of the bowl is highly polished and the base of its round, flat
heel is marked with the initials "CW" surmounted by a crown. A Dutch pipe
matching this description is illustrated by Bradley and DeAngelo in the
journal Archaeology of Eastern North America (1981). It was collected from
an Onondaga site in New York State dated to the late seventeenth century.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has more precise information
concerning the maker of this pipe. If anyone has excavated one, what was
the date of its context?

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely, Eva MacDonald
