Jim: Your reply hit one of MY nerves. The trite response of "Try the Library"
only works if you are in an area where the IS a functioning library! Our
local Tech University library could not even get me a 1940's American Antiquity
article with full citation provided to them. The city/county library is a
joke. They charge $4.00 for all interlibrary loan requests and give you $2.00
back if they can't find it. They have found me about 7 or 8 things but I am
out of pocket $30.00 for the fifteen things they could NOT find. Directory
assistance will find the Folgers company more quickly than the local libraries
can. We have had these discussion over this list since it's inception, same on
the Arch-L list and I am told by colleges in other disciplines they go the same
things. In archaeology and other disciplines, some teachers have assigned
their students fishing expeditions on the internet and discussion lists to see
how much information they retrieve. Remember that we have newbees, amateurs,
and school kinds on these lists as well as professionals. We need to suffer
the most simplistic of questions if we want this forum to be inclusive of all
people interested in Historical Archaeology.
