Panton, Leslie & Company was given a monopoly in the deer skin trade in
Florida in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. I don't remember a
specific reference to what was made from the skins, but I'm sure it is in the
book written by Coker and Watson:

Coker, William and Thomas D. Watson
1986 Indian Traders of the Southeastern Spanish Borderlands: Panton, Leslie
and Company and John Forbes and Company, 1783-1847. University of West
Florida Press, Pensacola.

One of the authors, Coker, is emeritus at UWF but hasn't moved into the world
of e-mail, so I'd be glad to get a phone number for you if you would like
more info.
