CALL FOR PAPERS
64th Annual Meeting of the Society for American Archaeology
Chicago, Illinois (1999)

The Society of American Archaeology Student Affairs Committee is
sponsoring a paper session entitled "Constructing Social Identities:
Gender, Ethnicity, and Status in the Archaeological Record." The paper
session is open to students currently pursuing degrees or courses of study
in archaeology at any level, and whose research examines gender, status,
or ethnicity. A tentative session abstract is as follows:

Gender roles, ethnic identities, and social status play a critical role in
shaping the archaeological record. Traditional concerns in American
archaeology such as trade relationships, environmental adaptations, and
production and consumption took place within the context of these varying
social constructs. While recent trends in archaeological theory have
emphasized the need to incorporate social identities into archaeological
interpretation, the application of such theory has met with variable
success. This session showcases student research which actively
incorporates these theoretical concerns of gender, ethnicity, and status
with the material record and archaeological data.

If you are interesting in presenting in this symposium, please submit a
copy of an abstract according to SAA criteria, along with a copy of
completed conference pre-registration (forms only) by July 30, 1998 to:

Gordon F.M. Rakita
University of New Mexico
Department of Anthropology
Albuquerque, NM 87131

Abstracts will be anonymously reviewed by the members of the Student
Affairs Committee, and a final panel of papers will be decided by August
15, 1998. All those submitting abstracts will be notified as soon as
decisions are made. For any additional information or questions, please
contact Gordon Rakita at [log in to unmask] or Caryn Berg at
