Early riflemen used a mixture of tallow & lard, or bear grease or
whale oil to lube their patches.  Other "secret" ingredients were
added such as:  besswax or lanolin or?
 
What ingredients would have been available to late 18th or early 19th
Century hunters that would have chelated iron gun barrels?
