During the last two summer field seasons, the blacksmith shop was
excavated on Mackinac (pronounced Mackinaw) Island. The principle
investigator was Dr. Roger T. Grange. Two seasons ago the field director
was Sheila Stewart, an MA student at the University of South Florida.
Last
year the field director was Anna East, also a MA student at the University
of South Florida. These two summers revealed the floors of three
consecutive blacksmiths shops. In the first two cases the shop was
destroyed by fire and rebuilt. In the last, it was transfered to a wood
and water shed where a lot of hankie pankie was going on according to
court marshall records. Both of the field director's can be reached by
their last name at (last name)@luna.cas.usf.edu A formal write up has
been done and can be retrieved by writing Phil Porter, Mackinac Island
State Historic Park, Mackinac Island, MI. They open the fort in late May,
but many of the full time staff stay on through the winter and could be
reached now. Best of luck. Stacey
