I have been aware of the use of Juniper trees for bow staves since
reading Phillip Wilke's excellent article in J. of CA and Great Basin Arch.
(Sorry I don't have the reference with me.) Recently I have seen
a number of Junipers that apparently were cut for staves in historic times.
The cuts were made with axes, camp sites nearby had old tin cans, the
cuts, though similar to the bow cuts, were often too small to be for bows.
The location of the trees is near the CA-Nevada border near Benton.

Does anyone have information on the historic use of these trees?
