There is a wonderfull little book on "the history of the British Pig" packed
with loads of usefull information and the most marvellous illustrations of
pigs that should shed some light on the subject.

I dont know much about importing livestock in the American context save for
the information that they were involved in the merino smuggleing game and got
some 300 merinos from the spanish flock during the Napelonic wars which formed
the basis for the famouse "wrinkley" Vermont breed that ws later imported to
Australia with disasterous results.
