Although Rita and Eric are dealing with a New England site, there may some
benefit in looking at Carl R. Lounsbury's _An Illustrated Glossary of Early
Southern Architecture and Landscape_ (1994, Oxford University Press). It
provides some fairly detailed information on early nails and, in fact
distinguishes/defined brads and sprigs for the Colonial period.

Hope it is of help.
