Hi
everyone,

This
is a just a friendly reminder that the registration deadline for the SAA 2013
Ethics Bowl is fast approaching.  Remember that the minimum number of
participants for team registration is three students; team rosters can be
modified up until the time of the event, so even if your list is not finalized,
your school can register.

We
look forward to hearing from you and your students!

Best
Wishes,

Kim

Ethics
Bowl 2013 - Call for Teams!

The
Society for American Archaeology's Committee on Ethics is pleased to announce
the Tenth Annual Ethics Bowl!  Graduate and undergraduate students are
invited to organize a team of 3 to 5 participants (+1 alternate) with a faculty
mentor to take part in the event at the SAA 78th Annual Meeting in Honolulu,
Hawaii on April 4, 2013. Students and faculty mentors are encouraged to form
collaborative teams across universities.

Each
year, hypothetical cases that describe archaeological dilemmas are used in the
debate-style competition of the SAA Ethics Bowl to explore the ethics of
archaeological practice.  Students may draw upon personal experience,
historical examples, existing codes of ethics, scholarly publications, and
current events to identify, explicate, and generate creative solutions to a
range of ethical problems and issues that archaeologists might encounter.

If
your school is interested in participating in this year's event, please contact
us at the e-mail below.  This year, the registration deadline for teams is
January 21, 2013. To register, send an email to the organizing committee with
the names and email addresses of the 3-5 members of your team and your faculty
mentor.  Please designate a chief contact person (team member or faculty
mentor) to receive emails and instructions on behalf of the team.

Please
also note: this year the number of participating teams is limited to eight (8),
due to space and time constraints at the annual meeting. The eight teams who
will participate will be chosen from among all registered teams by lottery on
January 22, 2013.  Teams not chosen will be placed on a “wait-list” and
will be allowed to participate if a team has to remove itself from competition.
We are working toward increasing participation at this year’s meeting;
additional teams may be added if space and time allow.

Read
more about the Ethics Bowl and download Rules and Procedures as well as the
2004-2012 case studies at:

We
encourage faculty to include the Ethics Bowl cases as an integral part of your
spring or winter term archaeology courses or activities. Case studies from
previous years make wonderful tools for teaching or materials for team practice
sessions in preparation for the actual Ethics Bowl!
