Several others have mentioned published references, mostly to western
windmills, so I will not repeat. HABS/HAER documentation is somewhat
difficult to access without going to Washington. The recent publication
"America Preserved; A checklist of Historic Buildings, Structures, and
Sites" from Library of Congress, Cataloging Distribution Service, 1995
(ISBN 0-16-045255-4) is a massive compilation, and it mentions an
"automated inventory (HABS/HAER Database)". However, the publication is
organized and indexed only by geographic location, not subjects, and the
database is not accessible (" on-the-spot" automated searches are not yet
available). The subject index is apparently only available in the Library
of Congress Prints and Photographs Division. Sorry.

There are other publications that may be useful, but I do not have them at
hand to evaluate. "Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American
Engineering Record: An Annotated Bibliography" 1992. Three microfiche
publications from Chadwyck-Healey, Ltd, 1101 King St, Suite 380,
Alexandria, VA 22314 (800 752-0515) are published or being published. The
first two are repros of HABS drawings, the third is from HAER.

Good luck.
