You may want to talk with John Kern, of the VDHR.

A decade ago, he was doing some research about the enslaved in Roanoke County. His contact information is:

Subject: J. Randolph Slaves from Roanoke Virginia

Can anyone provide a good sources for the freed J. Randolph slaves circa 1819 and a list of the freed slaves? I am interested particularly in a freed slave with one of the following names (all the same person but various names):

Jimmie Jeems

Jimmie James

Jimmy James

Jimmie Rail

York Rail

THe freed slaves settled in Ohio.. Piqua and/or Shelby (Ohio)

Thanks for your help
