Senator Edward William Proxmire was the senator (1957-1989) from 
Wisconsin, not Rhode Island, as a colleague just pointed out to me.
His "Golden Fleece Awards" were the center of great controversy, 
especially his attacks on the NSF, space exploration and other projects.
I do not know if he ever targeted archaeology, not to mention 
Historical Archaeology.
