Today's Independent (UK) has an article on Philippe Herreweghe conducting
Bruckner (no. 7) and Mahler (lieder) on authentic insturments.

The effect, Herreweghe says, in the Bruckner is to reduce the force of
the brass, making the brass less aggressive and more expressive of inner
uncertainty. I'd love to hear this as I'm tired of Bruckner recordings
ruined by blizkrieg brass - surely this is not the inner balance Bruckner
wanted or heard! Herreweghe says the different orchestral forces also
ally Bruckner more closely with Schubert (the best I've heard in this
respect is the NOI/Tintner Bruckner 2 on Naxos).

The reviewer said the authentic instuments in the Mahler took his breath
away.

Herreweghe plans to record a Bruckner cycle for Harmonia Mundi and I for
one am saving already.

Keep smiling,
