When Otello came out, there was a lot of talk that Verdi was influenced
by Wagner.  Shaw pooh-poohed this in a wonderful essay, and I haven't the
familiarity with either score to weigh in with an opinion.  However, this
might be the source of the idea that there is some sort of musical or
dramatic similarity.
