I agree.  Mutter's recording is absolutely superb, except for the opening.
I know, I'm microdissecting recordings, but the opening imho should be
pensive and joyous, not shostakovich-like.  If there is one flaw in her
playing (I think she's the greatest living violinist), it's that she is too
quick to lay on the angst.  She and Vengerov (who, though he needs to grow
up a little (this coming from someone a year younger & doesn't like his
Sibelius) have to be the two greatest violin talents alive, if not ever.
