Unlike most respondents to this question I can't pin it down to a
particular piece or incident or experience. As far as I can recall
I've always been aware of popular music and jazz and classical. And folk
and "light classical" and lots of other kinds. For me it never was an
either/or thing. Some kinds of music dropped out of my sphere of interest
fairly quickly (most folk, country, British Light Music) and others more
slowly (I now listen to much less jazz than I used to although some jazz
is still very high on my overall list, and I have little interest in film
soundtracks detached from the films). Indian classical arrived a little
later than the others. Perhaps I've been lucky in my background. I never
had much trouble keeping an interest in classical going in parallel with
other things.
