Many years ago I read anything I could get my hands on by Herman Hesse.
One book I remember enjoying, although I don't remember the book in
detail, was GERTRUDE. It involved a composer and two opera singers,
one male and one female. I think everyone loved the wrong person, and
it was not particularly a happy story, but, as many Hesse novels, it was
a great read and it was art.
I also remember reading a short novel, KLEIN UND WAGNER, which may have
appeared within a collection along with KLINGSOR'S LAST SUMMER. K&W was
a weird story -- but there's a lot of details missing from my memory of
those days...
I might just get them from my library one of these days and see if I
still think they're as good as I once did.
