Judith Lang Zaimont's New Fellowship Award and Winds Commission
New York, NY - American composer Judith Lang Zaimont has been awarded a
2005 Bush Artist Fellowship in Composition and the 2005-6 Kaplan Foundation
Commission for a new work for college-level Wind Ensemble.
The $44,000 Bush Artist Fellowship was one of four in the field of Music
Composition awarded from among fifteen total 2005 fellowships, drawn
from more than 500 applicants in various arts. Bush Foundation Artist
Fellowships support artists of demonstrated ability, 25 years or older
who may be at any stage of career development; among the qualities the
program seeks in an artist are "strong vision, creative energy and
perseverance." Two tiers of panels comprised of nationally known artists
and curators selected the fellowship recipients. The program provides
financial support to artists from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and South Dakota
for a period of 12 to 24 months. The Archibald Bush Foundation provides
financial support to artists from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and South Dakota.

Judith Zaimont has been awarded a commissioning grant by the Helen and
Sam Kaplan Charitable Foundation to compose a piece for college wind
ensemble on Jewish themes. This is a competitive, biennial awarded
commission. The new work, due for the 2006-2007 season, is being written
for the Saint Mary's University Music Department of Winona, Minnesota.
Past commissioned composers include Steve Barnett (2000), Lee Kesselman
(2002), and Philip Rothman (2004). This piece will be written in
cooperation with the SMU Concert Band and their director, Dr. Janet

In other news, Ms. Zaimont has been signed by MMB Publishing of St.
Louis as the primary publisher of her major works for orchestra and also
several of her best-known chamber compositions. Works now in the MMB
catalog include Monarchs: Movement for Orchestra (1988), Symphony No.
1 (1994), Elegy for Symphonic Strings (1998), Remember Me: Symphony No.
2 for Symphonic Strings (2000) and Stillness - Tone Poem for Orchestra
(2005). MMB will also now issue Zaimont's two Piano Trios 'Russian
Summer' and ZONES -- and Hidden Heritage A Dance Symphony for five

Judith Lang Zaimont is internationally recognized for her distinctive
style, characterized by its expressive strength and dynamism. Recent
commissions include works for the International San Antonio Piano
Competition, for chamber wind quartet (Aaron Copland Award), and as
Commissioned Composer of the California Music Teachers Association. Her
music is widely performed throughout the U.S. and Europe and has been
recorded for the Naxos, Koch International Classics, Arabesque, Albany,
Jeanne, Leonarda, Northeastern, and 4Tay labels.
Ms. Zaimont was awarded First Prize in the international 1995 McCollin
Competition for Composers (for "Symphony No. 1", performed by the
Philadelphia Orchestra in 1996). Her biography is found in most standard

individual chapters in specialist volumes and major articles in professional
