Len Fehskens writes:

>My understanding is that Madetoja was later than Sibelius, and that he

Sibelius was born in 1865 and lived until 1957. Madetoja was born in
1887 and died in 1947, which means that Sibelius was alive when Madetoja
was born and still living although, as we all know, no longer active, when
the younger man died.

I referred to the two composers' lifetimes. I find that Slonimsky,
in Baker's Dictionary, says of Madetoja that '(his) music is inspired
by Finnish melodies; he is held in great esteem in Finland as a worthy
continuator of the national Finnish school of composition, according to
precepts established by Sibelius.'

I still consider him greatly overlooked and welcome this discussion of his
music.
